I saved my plants from frying in the sun with some spotshading parasols I found on shadedot.com. You just stick them in the ground or in your potted plants and they filter the sun and shade the plants during the hottest time of the day. I love them. I have about eight of them sticking out of the plants on my deck. They're lovely.

@RiddleTales The weather where I live is REALLY humid so that doesn't bother them. When you transplant, don't do it in the beating sun, and keep them in the shade for a day or two to get their strength back. And when you transplant especially in the heat that you have, they will wilt a bit. As I mentioned, move them in a shady spot for a bit - don't over water - and see if that helps. Let me know! Q. The weather is going to be humid in my area for the next week, I had just replanted my plants to give them more room so they were already in shock. My plants have started to look under the weather so I brought them in side thinking it was the 90* heat killing them. But since it was humid when I watered the they didn't dry out the next day so I stopped watering them. How do I take care of my herbs in humid weather? They are already dieing! Help!

I'd preferring starting with a clay than sand... sand drains very easily and has almost no nutrients, where as clay is full of nutrients. Sand requires LOTS AND LOTS of organic matter to help it retain moisture and nutrients, and clay can be easily amended with lime and compost, and then a nice layer of mulch..

I agree ; using wood frames for raised beds seems extravagant , and just means cutting down MORE trees . In the spirit of the Garbage Warrior i used old metal office shelves and roof tiles i got for free .junk in other words , i let them down about 6 inches into the soil . i reckon this helps keep out perrenial weeds and stops the sides collapsing . I reckon the Chinese must get less rain than we do in England

They are leaving out important info. If you have clay soil you need to lime it. Just buy the cheap stuff, the expensive time release is actually encapsulated in MORE CLAY, so you will be poisoning your soil. Just lime it, let that soak in, add sand, and then add compost. You can turn clay into rich black soil in just a few years this way. Important to know if shit gets bad. If you can't buy lime, just use ash. It does the same thing, it raises the pH of the soil. Have fun!!!

I'm not sure why people use wood frames to make raised beds - this is counter-productive and not the point at all. Using wood can attract pests and fungus and does not allow the soil to 'breath' and get warm from the sun. In China, where raised beds are common practice, they don't use wood at all and have excellent raised bed gardens. Just measure out the rows - five feet wide by whatever length long, and about 4 feet wide at the top of the bed so the sides taper in a little.

If you want to see a different garden than Burchart and Glendale, please check up Jardin de Metis. It is a very charming and natural style garden, full of streams and slopes that show the best plant combination. It is like having a walk in the mountain at times. One of the books I read lists it as one of the best gardens on the east side of Canada, besides the Montreal Botanical Garden. It is worth visiting, especially for people who like blue poppies. It is 7 hours of drive from Montreal.

Yes, Buchart is beautiful, but soooo MANY people go there. Glendale Gardens is very close to Buchart and much more peaceful, its run by volunteers and is a secret place known mostly just to locals. Well worth the visit! Check out my tube. Just type in Glendale Gardens Victoria BC Canada. You will see what the community spirit can do! In the beginning you will see a few words typed then right into some beautiful pictures with monks chanting in the background! A peaceful place - serene!

Hello kirkygirl - Your honesty is greatly appreciated. It is not easy to get such an honest opinion from people of "The City of Denial". I was a tour bus driver for Wilson's Transportation, and took many bus loads of tourists in Butchart. No matter how many thousands of tourists we brought there, they treated us drivers like crap. "Here is a coffee and a donut", "please go back and sit in your bus". We couldn't get something as simple as a hot dog from that operation. Thanks again.

Yeah, having worked there, some of the kids CAN be kinda snotty and stupid, but for some of them, it's their first job (incl. me). The management isn't really all that great, and it's a stressful job to run a bunch of kids who have no clue what they're doing. It doesn't help that senior management is breathing down your boss' back, trying to make sure everything is "perfect".

Between the high price of the ferries, and Butcharts high addmission prices, most people from Vancouver can't even afford to go to Butchart for the day. I found the children operating Butchart gardens to be a bit unprofessional, considering the ultra high price of addmission. I would never go there again. I think the residents of the island get in for less, but tourists are ripped off with the high addmission price.

Why do people always say that these two wonderful women had a mental illness. I think you need to pay attention to the famous line in the documentary, "Everybody looks, thinks and feels differently over time." (Not sure if it's the exact quote but it's close enough). They act this way because they grew up rich and sophisticated and they kept that through the years(minus the money), and Big Edie would never leave the house, so they had to stay. They've just gotten used to the way they lived.

I'm in the Pennines in Yorkshire, England 1,000 feet above sea level. Not high compared to Lesotho but high here. We shall be sure to let people come and see our garden as and when they wish to. It is a wonderful idea that children and adults can build and work on together or separately. However, I am concerned as to whether the garden can sustain itself beyond the first year. I can't quite get a fix on how the washed-down compost spreads out into the circle and then works its way upwards to the roots of the vegetables which are being watered downwards every day. I'm sure someone can explain. I am very sorry to hear that some of you live in areas where marauding tribes steal your crops.

I was inspired enough by this video to go out and build a keyhole garden. It came out way better than I thought it would. I built the foundation out of slate I found in my local park.
